Obituary: Vesta Coombs Hastie

A memorial service for Vesta Coombs Hastie, 84, a Gardnerville resident for the past 26 years, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home, Gardnerville.

Mrs. Hastie died Jan. 7, 2002, in Carson City. She was born Oct. 11, 1917, in Council City, Alaska, to Nathan and Olive Storey Coombs.

Her mother and aunt were the first European girls on the Yukon River where their father transported the first gold miners to Dawson City during the 1900 Alaskan Gold Rush. Her great grandfather, Nathan Coombs, founded the city of Napa, Calif. in 1847. Mrs. Hastie was raised in Napa, and her father was a member of the Alaskan Legislature and introduced the first bill for Alaskan statehood, which he finally saw become a reality before his death at age 92.

Before moving to Gardnerville, she lived in the Lake Tahoe area for 25 years.

Mrs. Hastie helped her husband in their restaurant business. They owned and operated the Tahoe Sands and Vali Hi restaurants in South Lake Tahoe. She was a member of Soroptimists, the Barton Hospital Auxiliary and the Women's Golf Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1998.

Among her survivors are her sons John Jr. and Michael, both of Minden; grandchildren Kerri, Jody, Anna, Calie, Myles and Zachary and great-grandchildren Tara and Trysten.

Inurnment will be at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa.

Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Crematory.
