New classes for spring semester

Students returning to Western Nevada Community College today can "meet" relatives long deceased, visit historic Mexico or learn of the art of Leonardo de Vinci.

A variety of new and existing classes is being offered this semester at the college for incoming and returning students.

Kathy Van Ausdal studied family history research at Brigham Young University and has taught genealogy classes at WNCC since 1993.

"While many of my students are retirees, we are also getting quite a few younger students," Van Ausdal said. "People of all ages are interested in knowing their ancestry and finding documents that prove or disprove their family history."

The course is offered at the beginning and advanced levels where students will research and build their family trees within the United States.

Search for family members outside of the country can be completed in the computer genealogy class.

A writing-intensive memoirs and autobiography class is also available where students can record a personal history.

Students attending the campus in Douglas County will have a new history course this spring.

Kim Des Roches is teaching a history of the Mexican nation which she said "will examine social, economic, political and international events and issues.

"As one of the United States' closest neighbors, the importance of Mexico as an ally and sometime adversary cannot be undervalued."

The course will cover eras ranging from the Pre-Colombian era to the rise and fall of the Aztec Empire to the Mexican Revolution and beyond.

An art history class is being offered at both the Carson City and Fallon campuses.

The course begins with the early Renaissance of the 1400s, and covers artists Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rafael, who were creating their works during the High Renaissance.

Begining drawing is also offered in both Fallon and Carson City. The course develops drawing skills through practice with a variety of drawing tools and techniques.

"Art 101 is arguably the most important foundation you can have," said art instructor Tim Guthrie. "It improves skills that can be carried on to painting, sculpture, watercolor and photography."
