Without David Padgett, the Reno boys basketball team turned to its outside game in a big way against Douglas.
The Huskies hit 11 three-pointers on their way to beating the Tigers 69-63 on Friday. With the loss, Douglas fell to 3-4 in the Sierra League.
Reno had been a team that relied mostly on an inside game with the 6-11 Padgett. But with Padgett out for the season due to a knee injury, the Huskies turned to their outside game.
Douglas was able to build a seven-point lead late in the third quarter before Reno came back.
Reno led 32-26 at halftime, but Douglas outscored the Huskies 23-15 in the third period. The Tigers outrebounded Reno 7-3 and made just one turnover in the third quarter.
Douglas opened the period with an 11-3 run to take a 37-35 lead. Will Thomas later scored on a fast break layup and was fouled.
He converted the three-point play and Matt Saylo hit two foul shots to give Douglas a 49-42 lead with one minute, nine seconds left in the quarter. But Reno ended the period with a 5-0 run to pull within 49-47.
Reno took command with 1:12 left when it hit a three to take a 62-59 lead. The Huskies went on to put the game away by hitting 7-of-8 foul shots down the stretch.
Thomas had 22 points and four rebounds, Erik Olson had 20 points, eight rebounds and two steals and Travis Baker had 10 points and five rebounds for Douglas.
GIRLS
RENO 63, DOUGLAS 36
It looked promising for the Tigers when they jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led 14-6 late in the first quarter. Douglas had six steals and forced eight turnovers in the first period.
But Reno outscored Douglas 22-7 in the second quarter. The Huskies went on a 12-0 run to take a 30-19 lead late in the first half.
The Tigers pulled to within 39-31 in the third quarter when Amber Gwinn followed her own miss to score. But Douglas would come no closer as Reno outscored the Tigers 19-5 in the fourth quarter to bust the game wide open.
Emily Haas had 14 points and six rebounds, Andrea Honer had nine points, five steals and four assists and Gwinn scored seven points.
With the loss, Douglas fell into third place at 5-2 in the Sierra League behind Reno and Carson, who are both 6-1.
