Despite letting one slip away, it was still an encouraging effort for the Galena boys basketball team against Reed on Tuesday.
Galena built a 17-point lead in the second quarter, but couldn't hold on as Reed came back for a 75-70 win. Joe Heaton had an outstanding game for the Grizzlies, scoring 35 points. Galena fell to 4-5 in the High Desert League while the Raiders improved to 8-2.
"He really stepped up to the plate and acted like the kid we expected," Galena coach Tom Maurer said.
After building a 17-point lead, Galena made 18 turnovers the rest of the way. Up until that point, the Grizzlies had done an outstanding job handling Reed's pressure.
Reed went on a 24-2 run in the second and third quarters to turn the game around.
"I thought we played 12 minutes of great basketball," Maurer said. "We just succombed to a lot of costly turnovers.
"We just couldn't get back into it. We couldn't stop the bleeding."
Still, Maurer was pleased with his team's effort. "I just thought we played an excellent game," he said.
