Carson City Economic and Redevelopment Director Rob Joiner announced his resignation Tuesday.

Joiner, a Carson City employee for almost 18 years, said he is leaving to "pursue other things."

"The opportunity presented itself," he said. "The city is in a good position to carry on with things. There are a lot of other things I could be doing."

Until last year, Joiner served as the city's principal planner and redevelopment director before switching to a new position focusing more on economic development. The position paid $70,989.

Joiner wouldn't comment on his future plans except to say he isn't leaving Carson City and hopes to work with city officials on projects in the future. His 18th anniversary with the city will be July 9. His last day is July 12.

Joiner, a native or Reno, has a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Davis in urban geography, and is a thesis short of a master's degree in public administration from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Carson City Manager John Berkich said Joiner's position will be filled. However, Berkich said the position may resurface in a different format.

"It was important a year ago when it was created and every day it becomes more important because of the economic plans we're creating. This position takes on greater importance in the future of Carson City," Berkich said. "We plan on having someone, but we may not have someone who did everything he did. We'll look at how to position it for the future. How could it be more successful?"

Joiner was also responsible for the city's community development block grant program, and his salary was funded with a combination of city, grant and redevelopment funds.
