The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation is looking for a few good people, their names to be added to the Mills Park Memorial Plaque located near the Pony Express Pavilion. The Foundation chooses those to be honored and is looking for nominees.

"This memorial is dedicated to people who donate their time and efforts to bettering the quality of life in Carson City," said Fred Stanio, president of the foundation.

People are recognized every two years in four categories, including organization of the year, business of the year, volunteer of the year and volunteer of the years, a special category for those who have offered their services for extended periods of time.

Honorees can have their names engraved on the plaque, or dedicate the spot in the memory of another, he said.

Deadline for submissions is Aug. 5 and to keep expenses in line, a minimum $100 donation is required. A special commemorative ceremony is usually scheduled on Oct. 31, but that date has been moved to Sept. 11 to mark the one-year anniversary of the World Trade Center and Pentagon tragedies, Stanio said.

Nominations should include a brief explanation about the candidate and why he or she should be chosen. Submissions should be mailed to Fred Stanio, 181 Heidi Circle, Carson City, NV, 89701.

Created by Carson City officials in 1985, the foundation is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to enhancing the quality of life, education and preservation of Carson City's natural resources.

"We're the clearinghouse for donations to Carson City's parks," Stanio said. "We can take donations of money, land, or anything to be used for the betterment of local parks and other resources. The city can't do this, without having the money go into the general fund."
