Warrant against Dayton man retracted

An attempted-murder warrant for a Dayton man was retracted Monday by the Carson City Sheriff's Department.

Police are no longer looking for Caesar Munoz, 25, who police said Saturday was involved in a drive-by shooting

"We've retracted the warrant based upon the victim now being uncertain as to who it was that fired the shots," said Chief Deputy Scott Burau of the Carson City Sheriff's Department.

Police responded to Saliman Road near Robinson Street about 12:30 a.m. Saturday where Salvador Maldonado, 22, had an injury to his hand and Jose Escobar, 21, was grazed by a bullet on his back.

According to Burau, two vehicles, one carrying the shooter and a male passenger and the other carrying Maldonado and Escobar, were traveling east on Highway 50 near Mills Park.

Burau said the suspect vehicle, a brown 1988 Ford Bronco, allegedly flashed gang signs at the victims. There was a verbal exchange and the victims turned south on Saliman Road. The Bronco pulled up to Maldonado's vehicle and someone inside fired using a semi-automatic hand gun, Burau said.

Maldonado's vehicle was fired on several times. Burau said Munoz was identified as the shooter, but subsequent investigation revealed the victim was uncertain.

"At this point, the matter is still under investigation and we are examining additional evidence that we have," Burau said.
