Fernley High's Matt Lambeth and Smith Valley's Travis Hansen have been named as Northern Nevada's top male athletes of the year by NevadaPrep.com.
Lambeth was named as Northern Nevada's 4A/3A Athlete of the Year while Hansen was named as Northern Nevada's 2A/1A Athlete of the Year.
Lambeth, arguably the best athlete in school history, was the state's sixth-leading passer this past year for the Vaqueros, passing for 1,207 yards while rusing for 441 yards. He led Fernley to its first ever win over eventual state champion Truckee last season.
Lambeth led Fernley's basketball team in scoring and rebounding and led the Vaqueros to the 3A state semifinals the last two seasons. In baseball, Lambeth hit over .500 and was Fernley's ace pitcher in leading the Vaqueros to a state-runnerup finish this season. Last year, Lambeth helped lead Fernley to the state title.
Lambeth carries a 3.95 grade point average and his many extra-curricular activities include serving in a mentoring program at Fernley Elementary School. He will attend Mesa Community College in Arizona where he will play baseball.
As a quarterback for Smith Valley, Hansen led the Bulldogs to the state title game, passing for 1,404 yards, third best in the state. He completed 60 percent of his passes.
In basketball, Hansen averaged 21.9 points per game to finish second in the state after winning the scoring title the year before. He was named to the All-NevadaPrep.com second team as a guard.
In baseball, Hansen batted .452 and was 7-1 on the mound to lead the Bulldogs to the 1A state finals. He carries a 3.34 grade point average and does considerable volunteer work in the community.
