Local bowler heads for nationals

Carson City's Aaron Candee is on his way to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the Coca-Cola Bowling National Championships.

Candee advanced to the national event by winning the Coca-Cola Nevada State Championships sponsored by the Young American Bowling Alliance.

The state event was recently held in Yerington. Candee advanced to the state event by qualifying at the district tournament held in Carson City.

The national event will be held July 6-13. There will be $70,000 in scholarships awarded at the nationals and Candee could win up to $28,000 in scholarships.

Candee, 14, just completed his freshman year at Carson High. He won the state event in the 12 and over division, beating bowlers from across Nevada. He beat many older bowlers who were 16, 17 or 18.

For his age group, Candee won in the boys scratch division in which no handicap was used. He rolled the highest average for the title with a 224 average over six games. His highest game was 256 and his lowest score was 206.

"I bowled very well," Candee said. "I'm capable of bowling that well."

While Candee said he likes teams sports, he also said, "I enjoy bowling and golf because you get to compete against yourself. You can't blame it on anybody else because if you screw up, it's your fault."

Candee said he may want to some day pursue a career in bowling -- or as a chef.

"I'm not really sure," said Candee about his career plans. "I really do enjoy bowling, but I also enjoy cooking, too."

The highest game that Candee has ever rolled is 279, coming within one strike of a perfect 300 score.

Candee has earned $500 toward his trip and needs to raise an additional $1,100 to $1,200. Those interested in sponsoring the trip can call 883-7580.
