Obituary: Leonard D. Hill

Leonard D. Hill, 81, a Carson City resident for the past 20 years, died June 13, 2002, at his home. He was born Sept. 16, 1920, in Canadian, Texas.

He was active in school sports and family ranching. He attended the University of California at Davis and Baylor University.

Before moving to Carson City, he lived in Vacaville, Calif., for 20 years. He married Ruth Tate May 29, 1942, in San Diego, Calif.

Mr. Hill joined the United States Army Air Corps in 1940 and spent 23 years with the U.S. Air Force Medical Service as administrative officer, serving in the United States, Germany, Italy and England. He received a commendation ribbon for participation in the Berlin Airlift and retired as a lieutenant colonel.

Mr. Hill was active in civic affairs and was president of the Chamber of Commerce, the Ambassadors, headed the city planning commission, was a member of Rotary and Green Valley Club. He owned and operated Vaca Valley Real Estate.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Vanessa Hill of Vacaville; grandson Joffrey Hill of Boise, Idaho; a sister Cordelia Holt and brothers John and Walter.

Among his survivors are his wife of 60 years, Ruth Tate Hill; sons and daughters-in-law Leonard G. and Paula of Boise and Michael and Maryann of Carson City and daughter Victoria Hill Sales of Seattle; grandchildren Ryan and Aaron Sales, Justin Hill and Joshua, Jared and Ashley, all Carson City; two great-grandchildren; a sister Ruth Boles and a brother Charley Hill and many extended family members.
