Parks officials looking at uniform signs

Carson City's parks department is hoping to move from an era of plywood and posts to uniform signs of concrete.

Carson City parks could soon have new signs to identify each parcel as park property, Park Planner Vern Krahn said.

"What's happened is as we've been bringing a number of these parks on line, the Linear Park, Northridge, Blackwell's Pond, we need to put signs up so people know where they are," Krahn said.

People who use Edmonds Park and Governors Field say it would be nice to have a sign saying "You are here," he said.

City parks are identified by a hodgepodge of signs, or aren't identified at all, Krahn said. The design for the proposed park signs features a depiction of the Sierra Nevada and its trees atop a standing concrete slab. The name of the park and the city seal would adorn each sign, estimated between $1,200 and $2,200 depending on its size.

"We were trying to come up with something that reflects the community, so you couldn't drive to Reno and see the same sign," Krahn said. "Virtually anywhere in Carson City, you can see the Sierra.

The city's parks and recreation commission will decide today whether to approve the plan for the signs.

Krahn said there is money set aside that would see signs completed this fall at Edmonds Park, Governor's Field, Carson River Park, Ronald D. Wilson Park, the Mountain Street trailhead and perhaps the Moffat open space parcel.

Krahn said parks officials would like to add signs to around 35 park and open space properties in the next six years.

Parks commissioners will also review a landscaping plan for the Carson City freeway. Completed over the last 1-1/2 years by parks officials, members of Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides and Nevada Department of Transportation officials, the landscaping plan will see the freeway slopes covered in native vegetation, as well as decorative boulders and more landscaping at intersections.

GROW, city and NDOT officials are taking the landscaping scheme through various city commissions for approval before asking city supervisors to approve the landscaping plan July 18.
