Henry pitches one-hitter for Cardinals

Ryan Henry pitched a one-hitter for the Carson Cardinals 18 and under baseball team in their 1-0 win over Centennial on Thursday in the opener of the Timet Summer Classic.

The Cardinals ended up 1-1 on the first day of the Las Vegas woodbat tournament after it lost to the Vacaville Dodgers 9-5.

Henry retired the first nine batters he faced and had faced the minimum of hitters with two outs in the seventh inning against Centennial, which advanced to the state title game this past season. Henry walked the leadoff hitter in the fourth -- the only walk he issued in the game -- but that batter was erased by a double play.

UNLV-bound Chris Bonnell broke up the no-hitter in the fifth despite an outstanding defensive play by third baseman Andrew James, who made a diving stop on Bonnell's groundball. But Bonnell was able to beat it out for an infield hit. Bonnell, though, was erased by a double play.

Henry retired the first two hitters in the seventh, but the next batter reached on an error. Henry then struck out Bonnell to end the game. Henry struck out four and needed just 70 pitches for the complete game.

The Cardinals scored their run when Owen Brolsma, Matt Bowman and Aaron Henry all singled to load the bases. Adam Martin drove in the run on a fielder's choice.

Against Vacaville, Carl Winter and Bowman each had two hits and an RBI, Brolsma had a single and an RBI and Ryan Henry went 1-for-1.

The Cardinals will play at 8 p.m. today against Foothill of Tucson, which was ranked No. 15 in the nation this past summer. The tournament features 16 teams from California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and St. Louis.
