Lundquist named to PCL all-star team

PORTLAND, Ore. - Carson High graduate Dave Lundquist can call himself an all-star.

Lundquist will represent the Portland Beavers and the Pacific Coast League when the PCL plays the International League in the 15th-annual Triple-A All-Star Game to be held July 10 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Both the PCL and International League teams were selected by club personnel, media representatives and league administrators.

Lundquist leads the PCL with 20 saves in 24 chances and is 1-4 with a 5.52 earned run average. Lundquist's ERA became deceptively high when it ballooned during his blown save chances. Lundquist has held opponents to a .233 average this season.

The 29-year-old was a fifth-round selection of the Chicago White Sox organization in 1993 and has spent the last two seasons in the San Diego Padres system.

With 22 points, Lundquist was the winner of the Rolaids Relief Man competition for the month of April. The right-hander has saves to show for all but nine of his appearances this season. Lundquist was 4-7 with a 3.11 ERA and seven saves in 50 games at Portland last season. In 17 relief appearances with the Padres in 2001, he was 0-1 with a 5.95 ERA. He also pitched for the White Sox in 1999.

His save total of 20 thus far is one more than he had during his first nine years of professional baseball.

"Lundquist has had a super year for us," said Beavers manager Rick Sweet. "Having an outstanding closer like him makes a huge difference."
