Obituary Edwin Watson Stockly Sr.

Edwin Watson Stockly Sr., a Topaz Lake resident, died Feb. 19, 2002, at his home. He was born and raised in Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y.

He attended St. Mark's Episcopal Preparatory School in Southborough, Mass. He graduated from Princeton University with honors in 1949 and from the University of Texas Law School in 1955 with honors.

He married Gladys Hill in 1952. They divorced in 1975. He then married Jane Foraker-Thompson in 1979.

Mr. Stockly worked as a newspaper reporter for a few years in Alamogordo, N.M., and El Paso, Texas. He served the Atomic Energy Commission from 1955-57 and then opened his own law office in Los Alamos where he practiced general law until 1979. He practiced family law and served as attorney for Idaho Natural Resources Legal Foundation from 1984-88 and as Boise County Prosecutor from 1989-92.

He served the New Mexico Legislative Council Service as Special Assistant to the Attorney General in the New Mexico Banking Department and was elected as the first County Magistrate of Los Alamos. He represented the Los Alamos School Board and the planning and zoning commissions.

He was noted for his extensive community volunteer service, helped found the Los Alamos Family Council Mental Health Center on which he served as president and board member for 24 years and on the New Mexico Blue Cross-Blue Shield Board for an equal length of time. He served on the Northern Central New Mexico Comprehensive Health Planning Council and during the 1970s on the New Mexico Council of Community Mental Health Services.

He became active in the Democratic Party and in environmental and peace activities in Idaho. He served on the board of the Snake River Alliance, the Idaho Conservation League and the Sierra Club.

After moving to Berkeley in 1994, he did volunteer work with the Dorothy Day Center program to feed the homeless and volunteer office work at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Berkeley.

Among his survivors are his wife; children Dr. Sue Stockly of Washington, D.C., Ann Armijo of Albuquerque, N.M., Leigh Alkire of Las Cruces, N.M., Edwin W. Jr. of Montrose, Calif.; Cynthia Stockly of Las Cruces, N.M.; brother John of Chatham, N.J.; stepchildren Steeve Lynn of West Africa, Dan Lynn of West Olive, Mich.; Diana Lynn of Seattle, Wash., and Dr. Julie Lynn Coronado of Takoma Park, Md., and several grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-45.
