There are many ways to reach out to those suffering from cancer. This weekend lending a hand may mean taking a gamble on a new car.

The Carson Advocates for Cancer Care are selling raffle tickets for a new Toyota Echo as a fund-raiser.

Tickets cost $5 each or three for $10 and will be offered from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday in the Target parking lot. Look for the balloons at the Echo display.

Tickets are also available at check-out counters of cooperating retailers in Carson City, Dayton and the Carson Valley.

The car will be awarded at the USO Dance May 18.

The car is a gift for Cancer Advocates' fund-raising from Dennis Small and Slot World Casino.

The number of cancer patients served by Carson Advocates for Cancer Care grew to 68 patients -- men, woman and children -- in February, said Pat Williams, chairperson for the agency's Patient Review Committee.

"CACC provides money to help pay for prescription medicine, pain relief, treatments and medical procedures, including out-of-area hospitals and clinics," he said.

Those currently receiving assistance from advocates for cancer care are seven children; three diagnosed with brain cancers, in Dayton and Carson City plus four leukemia victims in Fallon; in Ely, Elko and Winnemucca help is being given to breast and ovarian cancer patients; in Reno aid is going to ovarian cancer patients; in Gardnerville to those with lung cancer and to those with breast cancer in Incline Village.

"Sadly the number of needy grows faster than money available to help them," Williams said. "Even a small amount of money can help when it is donated regularly, say, on a monthly basis. Just $100 per month adds up to a sizable annual gift -- maybe enough to meet a patient's needs for a whole year.

"CACC needs volunteers to help raise funds; volunteering is another way to make a meaningful contribution," he said.
