Principal Dave Aalbers returned to Fritsch Elementary School on Monday morning to find the marquee sign in front of the school had been vandalized.

"It's very disheartening to know that anybody is being that destructive and mistreating property that doesn't belong to them," he said. "You put effort into creating school pride and somebody arbitrarily decided to destroy it."

The sign was hit in three places, breaking the black lettering and the white background. Aalbers said a large, clear marble was found at the base of the sign.

"It was a deliberate act and not just an accident," he said. "They did it more than once."

Aalbers is not sure what the cost will be to repair the damage but said the entire sign cost around $5,000. The money to purchase the sign was raised by students at the school through a program sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association.
