Lundquist loses out to Boyd

Carson High graduate Dave Lundquist is not on the San Diego Padres opening day roster -- for now.

The San Diego Union Tribune reported that Jason Boyd was chosen over Lundquist and Matt DeWitt for the Padres' sixth and final bullpen spot on the 25-man roster. But the Union Tribune also reported that pitcher Jose Nunez could be placed on the disabled list. Nunez was scheduled to pitch today against the Seattle Mariners in an exhibition game.

Lundquist could find out as soon as today if he will be placed on the opening day roster as the Padres could place Nunez on the disabled list as soon as today.

If Nunez is placed on the disabled list, the right-handed Lundquist or DeWitt could take his place. But the Padres could also trade for a left-hander to go along with left-handed Alan Embree.

The Union Tribune reported on Thursday that Padres' manager Bruce Bochy told Jason Boyd that he would be on the 25-man roster when the Padres open on Monday against the defending World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks.

If Lundquist doesn't make the opening day roster, he will start out with the Padres' Triple A affiliate, the Portland Beavers.

Boyd was battling Lundquist and DeWitt for the Padres' sixth and final bullpen spot. Bochy informed all three of his decision after the Padres broke spring training camp on Thursday.

The Union Tribune reported that Bochy told Lundquist and DeWitt that they both deserved a spot on the 25-man roster, but that Boyd was "flawless."

Lundquist and DeWitt both had an earned run average below 2.50 this spring, but Boyd allowed no runs and struck out 10 through 8 1/3 innings.

Boyd has pitched in the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies. Lundquist has had stints with the Chicago White Sox in 1999 and the Padres last season.
