Vegas mayor lone holdout in Guinn love fest

Of Nevada's 19 mayors, only Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has not endorsed Gov. Kenny Guinn for re-election.

Goodman, who announced he would not seek the governor's office in October, said in March he has not closed the door on a run at the office.

Goodman is scheduled to speak at Western Nevada Community College's graduation ceremony in Carson City on May 21.

Guinn's opponent for the office in 1998 was Las Vegas Mayor Jan Jones.

North Las Vegas Mayor Mike Montandon spoke for the rest of the state's mayors.

"Kenny Guinn is a proven leader who continues to listen closely to the people of our state and respond effectively to the challenges we face as Nevadans."

"With the establishment of the Millennium Scholarship, his scrutiny of the state budget, his funding of crucial health care needs and his unwavering commitment on the Yucca Mountain issue, Governor Guinn has truly earned our support for another term," Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson said.

"I've always enjoyed a solid working relationship with the mayors of Nevada's cities, and I'm very proud and grateful to receive their endorsement," Guinn said. "Strong communication between the state and local governments is key to effectively addressing many of the issues we face."

"The governor has a genuine belief in the people of Nevada and a strong desire to make our state a better place to live and work. I support his reelection with great enthusiasm," Boulder City Mayor Bob Ferraro said.

Elko Mayor Mike Franzoia said "Kenny Guinn has the mind set of a CEO combined with great compassion for the citizens of Nevada. He provides the kind of leadership we need at this point in our state's history."
