GALENA 12, ELKO 7
Steve LeRud belted a three-run home run in the sixth inning to break open a tight game as the Grizzlies eliminated Elko. Galena will play at 3 p.m. today against Douglas at Reno High.
Doug Gasca also homered for Galena, which had 13 hits. The Grizzlie led 6-0 after four innings when Elko cut the deficit to 6-5 in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Chris Vlasic singled and scored on LeRud's single and Kameron Davis belted a two-run double to give Galena a 9-5 lead.
LeRud had three hits, Vlasic had three hits, including a double, Brandon Evans and Davis each had two hits, including a double, Warren Whitley doubled and Luke Penrose singled for Galena.
Tim Thompson struck out 10 through six innings for the win. R.J. Erickson pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two.
NORTHERN 3A
FERNLEY 10, NORTH TAHOE 1
Cody Wagner had a huge day for the defendings state champions, going 2-for-2 with a grand slam home run and a two-run home run. Wagner also pitched a scoreless seventh. Matt Lambeth went six innings for the win.
Kyle Davis went 3-for-4 and Brian Reeder and Derek Henry added hits for the Vaqueros, which will play Lowry at 1 p.m. today in the semifinals at Fernley. In the other semifinal, Spring Creek, a 4-2 winner over Dayton, will play Manogue. The Vaqueros need to win one of their next two games to advance to the state tournament.
Also in softball, host Fernley, the No. 1 seed, will play the winner between Spring Creek and Lowry at 4 p.m.
