A memorial service for Melvin Eugene Wass, 75, a former Gardnerville resident, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mariposa Funeral Home, Mariposa, Calif., with Pastor John Trujillo officiating.
Mr. Wass died May 6, 2002, at his home in Mariposa. He was born Aug. 25, 1926, in Mariposa to Herman and Agnes Wass.
Mr. Wass worked as a self-employed rancher both in Nevada and in Mariposa, owned Mel's Leather and worked at the pack station at Fish Camp in Yosemite National Park. He was a 4-H leader and a member of Cathy's Valley and Triangle Roping Clubs. He roped at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds for many years.
Among his survivors are his wife Marjorie of Mariposa; son and daughter-in-law Eric and Tami Wass of Ogden, Utah; daughter Gayle McCarthy of Tehachapi, Calif.; son Brent Wass of Mariposa; son and daughter-in-law Steven and Melinda Wass of Bakersfield, Calif.; brothers James of Mariposa and Al of Touchet, Wash.; sisters Lois Sparks of Mariposa and Edna Ashburn of Atwater, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and many family members throughout the Sierra.
Memorial contributions may be made to John C. Fremont Hospice in Mariposa.
