Galena in contention for state title

Galena High is in contention for team and individual titles at the NIAA/U.S. Bank State 4A Golf Championships.


The Grizzlies stood in second after the first day of the event on Tuesday at Pauite Golf Course in Las Vegas. Galena's Bryson Young and Pat Flynn were also in the running for the individual title.


Galena fired a 385 and trails Palo Verde by four strokes. The top five team scores on Tuesday were:


Palo Verde 381; Galena 385; Bishop Gorman 393; Bonanza 394; Coronado 397.


Young fired a 71 and is tied for second with Durango's Mitch Carlson. Coronado's Matt Edwards leads with a 68. Flyn is tied for fourth with Palo Verde's Brandon Loska as both golfers fired a 72. Galena's Matt Kinsinger is tied for 15th after firing a 77.


Douglas High's Jonathan Merry fired an 80 and is tied for 29th and Carson's Tim Hohl shot an 83 and is tied for 38th. Also for Galena, Steve Kafchinski fired a 79 and is tied for 23rd, Morgan Goff fired an 86 and Chris Bordogioni shot a 94. The final round of the tournament is today.


3A GOLF.


Yerington's Darren Jim had an excellent first round on Tueday in the 3A state event at Reno's Arrow Creek course. Jim fired a 79 and is tied for eighth with Lowry's A.J. Hegarty and Manogue's Drew Saldana.


Virgin Valley's Rustin Bonner leads the event after firing a 73. Others who qualified for the event were Yerington's Brian Blasco and Fernley's Matt Leestma and Eric Dye. The 3A event also concludes today.
