Two strokes stood between Galena High's Bryson Young and a state title in boys golf.
Young settled for third at the NIAA/U.S. Bank 4A State Championships on Wednesday at Paiute Golf Course in Las Vegas. The Grizzlies also settled for third as a team.
Carson High's boys golf team, meanwhile, won the state academic title.
Bishop Gorman fired a 379 on Wednesday to win the team title, finishing with a two-day total of 772. Palo Verde, which was in first after the first day with a 381, finished second with a 777.
Galena, which stood second after the first day with a 385, fired a 400 to place third with a 785.
Coronado's Matt Edwards won the individual crown, firing a 75 on Wednesday to finish with a 143. Edwards also led after the first round after firing a 68.
Young actually finished in a tie for second with Durango's Mitch Carlson, but lost the USGA scorecard tiebreaker. Both golfers had identical scores of 71 on Tuesday and 74 on Wednesday to finish with a 145.
Galena's Pat Flynn, who was tied for fourth with a 72 after the first day, finished 16th after firing an 86 on Wednesday to finish with a 156. Flynn finished in a tie with teammate Matt Kinsinger (77-79).
Galena's Steve Kafchinski finished 19th (79-79-158). Douglas High's Jonathan Merry finished with a 162 (80-82).
Carson High sophomore Tim Hohl finished with a 173 (83-90). "He was a little down," Carson coach Paul Croghan said. "But we told him, you made it and a lot of guys didn't.
"He had some good holes and he had some bad ones. That's the way golf is."
Carson won the state academic title as its 11 golfers had the highest cumulative grade point average in the state at 3.57. Three golfers have a G.P.A. of 4.0: Hohl, Tyson Roser and Martin Jennings-Teats.
Carson was able to win the academic crown even though it had 11 golfers while most other teams had just six or seven players. The title is made that more impressive since the Senators play in more tournaments out of the area than most teams.
"They probably miss more school than most of them," said Croghan about his club as compared to most teams.
Also for Galena at the state event, Martin Goff (86-92) and Chris Bordogioni (94-84) each fired 178.
3A GOLF
Yerington's Darren Jim and Fernley's Matt Leestma finished in a tie for 13th on Wednesday in the 3A State Championships at Reno's ArrowCreek Golf Club.
Jim (79-86) and Leestma (81-84) each finished with a 165. Jim was tied for eighth after Tuesday.
Also for Fernley, Ashley Elson fired a 179 (97-82) and Eric Dye shot a 197 (106-91).
