Champion Motor Speedway General Manager Jeb Onweiler announced Tuesday that Robert Kline has been named race director of the 1/3 mile asphalt oval racetrack for the 2003 season.
Kline's duties will include overseeing of all back gate and on-track activities during racing events and practice nights.
"I'll be in charge of scorers, flagmen, everything on the track, security, back gate and run the show," Kline said.
"The plate's full -- especially with the type of program scheduled -- I know I can do it."
Kline said he feels comfortable with Onweiler and with the cooperation of Jim Bawden and Henry Hodges Sr., track lessees, he knows they can "make this thing fly."
"We've done a lot of talking," Kline said. "There's a good understanding with all of us and we've got a good program, we really do. We're going to put a good show together for the fans. We'll also need some help and cooperation from the drivers to keep the program on schedule.
"We've been there once before and done that. It's real simple and we can do it."
Involved in racing more than 35 years, Kline's resume includes seat time in go karts, drag racers, hobby stocks, street stocks and late models. He also worked with various NASCAR Winston West and Southwest Tour teams. Kline served as race director for the track in 1999-2000.
"Jeb's building the 2003 schedule and one thing is for sure -- race fans in Carson City are in for a thrill," Kline said. "I'd like to thank Jeb for asking me to join his staff and I feel very confident that 2003 will be a banner year at Champion Motor Speedway."
"We feel Robert's experience in the motorsports industry will prove to be a tremendous asset for the Champion Motor Speedway," Onweiler said. "We plan on presenting some high-energy shows and we'll need the very best people at all positions to pull it off.
"With Robert in charge of the racing operation on Saturday nights, I can concentrate on the show-biz side of the program and have more time to spend with our VIP guests, sponsors and media. It gives me a great sense of security knowing that Robert is handling the action on the track and in the pits. I have every confidence that he'll do a great job for us."
