Carson City supervisors approved a citywide zoning change Thursday that will allow the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada to relocate into a residential neighborhood.
Although the zoning change has drawn opposition in the past from residents around the club's proposed new Northridge Drive and Lompa Lane location, the issue passed easily.
The next step for Lumos and Associates, an engineering firm representing the club, will be to apply for a special-use permit.
Lumos and Associates proposed the zoning change to make way for the club's relocation to the new 17-acre parcel.
A vocal group of residents who opposed the placement of the club in their residential area was not present at Thursday's meeting. In the past neighbors testified to the city's planning commission that they didn't believe a city-wide zoning change was necessary and that children already had enough places to be noisy in the city.
The land was purchased two years ago by the club because of its safe neighborhood location and proximity to Empire and Mark Twain elementary schools.
"This is really where (Boys & Girls Clubs) get the best use," said Carol Dotson, director of planning for Lumos and Associates.
Boys & Girls Club officials were not at the meeting and did not return phone calls Thursday.
