Cooks at the Carson Nugget have been frantic this week, preparing to serve some 1,600 free Thanksgiving Day meals with all the trimmings.
The annual event at the Carson Nugget Coffee Shop, 507 N. Carson St., will open the doors again to anyone who may not otherwise get a Thanksgiving dinner.
"We just seem to get more people here every year," said Kelly Brant, casino promotions director.
A free traditional meal of roast turkey or baked ham with all the trimmings will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.
To accept the offer, customers just need to sign the check, hand it to the cashier, and say, "I'm a guest of the Nugget today."
Brant said about 3,600 pounds of turkey and 1,000 pounds of ham will be served in the coffee shop and for paying customers at the daytime buffet. That will accompany 600 pounds of stuffing, 300 pounds of yams, 400 to 600 pounds of fresh mashed potatoes and about 100 gallons of giblet gravy, he said.
Almost 1,000 pies will also be served on Thanksgiving, Brant said.
The Carson Nuggett, which marked its 45th anniversary this month, also provides free holiday meals on Christmas Day. The free holiday meals have been a tradition since the Nugget opened, Brant said.
