Helaine Jesse hopped on a Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycle this week to help raise funds for the Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada Community College.

"It was wonderful," she said afterward, although the bike was not really ready to ride. "There's no oil in it yet."

Harley-Davidson Financial Services donated the 1100 cc, 115-horsepower V-Rod to the Western Nevada Community College Foundation during a Wednesday ceremony at the Harley-Davidson store in Carson City.

The bike will be auctioned with sealed bids to raise money for the observatory under construction.

"I might put a bid on it myself," said Jesse, WNCC's vice president of institutional advancement.

She said it is hoped that the auction will raise $25,000 to help finish the observatory.

The bids will be opened at the observatory's "First Light" opening

celebration in March, said college spokesman Mike Greenhan.

Forms for the sealed bid auction may be obtained from the foundation office, 2201 W. College Parkway, Carson City. For more information, call the office at 445-3240.
