Douglas ties South Tahoe girls, remains in second place in league

Douglas High needed a win to get back on top of the Sierra League but could only manage a 2-2 tie with first place South Tahoe on Saturday in Minden.

The Vikings went up 1-0 but goals by Hannah Sullivan and Britney Christen gave the Tigers a 2-1 halftime lead. South Tahoe got the equalizer three minutes into the second half and then the game got a bit out of control. Douglas' Rebecca Wallstrum left the game and was eventually taken to the hospital, according to Fred Schmidt.

"It was really a hard fought game," Schmidt said. "We were playing really well for a while. It was a little frustrating because we knew we had to beat them to get tied for first place. But I was real proud of the girls. We were obviously at their level."

The Tigers are now 5-1-1 in league and 7-2-1 overall. South Tahoe, which beat Douglas 2-0 last month, keeps hold of first place with a 6-0-1 league record and stays three points ahead of second place Douglas. The Tigers play Wooster on Tuesday.

In the JV game, Douglas won 3-0.

CARSON BOYS VARSITY 5, HUG 0

Carlos Hernandez had two goals and two assists in the Senators' shutout win over the Hawks on Saturday in Reno.

Kirkwood Harris had two goals and Gary Walker had the other one. Ernesto Ayala had two assists and Christian Losche had one for Carson, which improves to 7-0-3 overall and 4-0-3 in the Sierra League.

SOUTH TAHOE 6, DOUGLAS 0

Chase Zumpft and Danny Ross combined to make 24 saves in the lopsided loss against the Vikings on Saturday in Minden. South Tahoe (12-0-2 overall, 5-0-2 league) scored four goals in the first half and two more in the second.

The Vikings beat the Tigers 8-0 earlier this season in South Lake Tahoe. Douglas drops to 3-4 in league and 4-4-1 overall.

In the JV game, South Tahoe won 3-0. The Tigers drop to 4-3 in league play while the Vikings are still undefeated at 6-0-1.
