Carson golf fails to make zone

For the first time in 10 years under coach Paul Croghan, the Carson High girls golf team will not be playing in the Northern 4A zone tournament.

Carson was knocked out of the zone tournament after shooting its second worst score of the year on Wednesday at Rosewood Lakes. Meanwhile, Douglas shot its best score of the year to knock the Senators out of the zone event.

Carson should still have two players in the zone event as individuals: Ciarra Christian and Liz Rankl. Croghan said Lindsay Farnworth also has a chance to make the zone event for the Senators.

Douglas won Wednesday's event with a 471. Galena placed second with a 475. Galena's Lux Gill was the low score medalist with an even-par 72.

The Tigers needed to finish five spots ahead of Carson to knock the Senators out of the zone tournament. Carson failed to finish in the top eight on Wednesday. The top eight teams throughout the season advance to zone.

Douglas and Galena were followed by: Reed 480; South Tahoe 485; Wooster 489; Spanish Springs 498; Reno 538; and Elko 538.

Carson finished with a 546, its worst score since the season-opening tournament. Six teams finishing under 500 was also a first since he's been coaching, Croghan said.

"Douglas played really well," Croghan said. "We didn't play well. That's kind of a downer."

Christian played well on Wednesday, shooting a 91. Also for Carson, Rankl fired a 102, Farnworth had a 114, Megan Good fired a 118, Erica McAfee shot a 121 and Kelsey Green had a 131.

The zone tournament will be held this Tuesday and Wednesday at Sierra Sage.
