Galena girls lead zone golf

As expected, Lux Gill and the Galena High girls golf team dominated the first round of the Northern 4A Zone Golf Championships.

Meanwhile, Carson High's Ciarra Christian played well and looks to have a shot at making the NIAA/U.S. Bank State Championships.

Galena looks to be well on its way to the Northern 4A title after firing a 446 on Tuesday. The Grizzlies lead second place Spanish Springs by 40 strokes after Spanish Springs shot a 486.

Gill also looks to be well on her way to a zone title after firing a first round 75. The next closest competitor is nine strokes behind with an 84. The zone event concludes today at Sierra Sage.

Christian fired a 91 and stood near the top 10 overall after the first round. The top five golfers who are not on the three qualifying teams for state also qualify for the state tournament.

After the first round, South Tahoe was in third with a 488 and were followed by Reed and Wooster, who each shot a 492. After the first round, Christian was tied for sixth among golfers who were not on the top three teams, effectively one stroke out of a state qualifying berth.

"If she can improve a couple shots I think she has a good shot," Carson coach Paul Croghan said.

Croghan said Christian shot a solid round despite struggling over the last three holes.

"She kind of let it slip away a little bit, but still that's a pretty good score." Croghan said. "She's right there. She didn't shoot herself out of it."

Also for Carson, Elizabeth Rankl fired a 102, Lindsay Farnworth shot a 110 and Amanda Carvin shot a 115.

Douglas was in eighth place after the first round with a 526. Kerriann Zink fired a 94, Julie Gingrich and Kristina Colyer each fired a 104, Tasha McCann shot a 108, Ashley Hartley fired a 116 and Cassie Sorich shot a 188 for the Tigers.
