Five challengers try to unseat incumbent

Washoe Tribal Chairman Brian Wallace, a 12-year incumbent, squares off against five challengers in Saturday's tribal election.

The race for the chairman's job includes candidates Steve Dexter of Carson City, Al Granados of the Bay area, who plans to retire to Gardnerville, Art Sam of Bridgeport, Calif., and Benny Mills of Carson City.

Wallace's opponents say accountability is necessary for the chairman and have accused him of losing funds. Wallace has denied the accusations and said they have not been substantiated.

Another 35 candidates are running for Washoe community council positions. All positions are for four-year terms.

Tribal officials said they are ready for the Washoe general election Saturday.

"We are hoping we have a really good turnout," said Darinda Caldera, secretary of the Washoe election board.

"I just love it when tribal members come out and vote. It just warms my heart."

Washoe tribe members will vote for community council representatives from Carson City, Dresslerville, Reno/Sparks, Stewart and Woodfords Washoe colonies. Representatives for off-reservation seats also will be decided.

Polling precincts include the Dresslerville gym, the Carson City colony gym, the Stewart Community Center, the Woodfords fire house and the Reno/Sparks multi-purpose room.

Voting will be conducted from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday with the tallying being completed by Sunday morning, Caldera said.
