Carson High's Natalie Rogers and Josh Brekken won their first round matches in the Zone Singles Tennis Championships on Thursday.
Rogers, the No. 5 seed from the Sierra League, defeated Reed's Annie Post 6-3, 6-2. Rogers will play Sparks' Kristin Payton in a second round match today. Carson coach Diane Baker said Rogers has a strong chance to make the semifinals of the zone tournament if she plays well. For the Carson boys, Brekken won his first round match 6-1, 6-1.
Doubles play will also begin today. For Carson's girls, Staci Cobler and Jenae Jeppson, the No. 5 seed from the Sierra League, and Michelle Van Epps and Kelsey Joyce will play in the doubles tournament.
Baker said that Cobler and Jeppson have a strong chance to advance to the quarterfinals while Van Epps and Joyce also have a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.
