Members of Soroptimist International of Carson City and the Carson Advocates for Cancer Care said this week they raised about $17,000 at their first "Stroke for Hope" golf tournament Oct. 5.
The sold-out tournament, which drew 147 players, was held to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and cancer care.
"That ($17,000) figure is not finalized, but close" after expenses, said Dixie Busch, co-chairwoman of the Breast Cancer Awareness committee. Busch and Ron Waicul chaired the event. There were no hole-in-one winners, but Busch said there was a close one -- though close doesn't count.
"We've had wonderful cooperation from the community," Busch said. "They were just fantastic."
The proceeds will be divided among Advocates for Cancer Care and Soroptimist International of Carson City. Soroptimist will use the money to provide mammograms for an estimated 1,500 women in the community between the ages of 40 and 49 who are underinsured.
The advocates will use the funds for cancer treatment, prescriptions and homecare health.
Gov. Kenny Guinn declared Oct. 5 Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Tahoe-Carson Radiology/Great Basin Imaging was the corporate sponsor, Carson City Toyota was the Hole-in-One sponsor and Eagle Valley Golf Course hosted the event.
In addition, more than 40 businesses and companies participated as tee, green and contest sponsors and more than 65 donations were received for the silent auction and raffle.
Soroptimist International of Carson City, an all-volunteer club of business and professional women, is working to improve these figures by offering free mammograms to those women who cannot afford them.
