The Nevada State Railroad Museum plans to celebrate the anniversary of Nevada's statehood Saturday with free admission and a day full of activities for visitors.
Meanwhile, railroad fans received some good news with the opening of the new office for Northern Nevada Railroad Association in Carson City. The association helps raise funds to rebuild the Virginia & Truckee Railroad by selling gifts at the office.
The museum will operate its train of historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad equipment at 40-minute intervals all day Saturday. The first departure is at 10 a.m. and the last at 4 p.m. Fares for train rides are $2.50 for adults and $1 for children 6 to 11. Children younger than the age of 6 ride free.
The Silver State Detachment of the Marine Corps League will be serving hamburgers and hot dogs in the station area. The Reno All British Car Club will be displaying MGs, Triumphs and other cars in the parking lot.
The MacKay School of Mines Club will demonstrate gold-panning. The Carson City Community Band will present a concert in the museum's Interpretive Center.
The museum, open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is on Highway 395 at the south end of Carson City at the intersection of Fairview Avenue. Call John Frink at 687-6953.
