Carson volleyball sweeps by Wooster

The Carson High volleyball team took care of business before its showdown with Douglas by sweeping past Wooster 15-2, 15-7, 15-2 on Tuesday at home.

Carson stayed unbeaten in Sierra League play heading into its showdown with Douglas on Thursday at CHS. Wooster came into Tuesday's match 2-2 in the Sierra League, with its only losses coming to Douglas and South Tahoe.

South Tahoe, which is also expected to contend for the Sierra League title, plays Carson next week.

"I'm always concerned when we show up to play," Carson coach Daryl James. "I think we did a heckuva job.

"We handled the ball well. The bottom line is we had better ball control than them."

James said the matches against Douglas and South Tahoe are what the season is all about.

"Both programs I respect," he said. "They do a good job. We'll see what happens."

James said he isn't concerned about history when it comes to Douglas.

"I'm not much of a history buff," he said. "We've beaten them when they were better and they've beaten us when we were better.

"Douglas will be fun. Tahoe will be fun. These are the fun matches. These are the ones that make your year."

The only sign of any trouble against Wooster came in game two when the Colts were within 12-7. But Shannon Devereaux served two straight aces and Rachel DeRiemer put away a kill on game point.

Carson jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game three behind Devereaux and Terri Niederer. Devereaux served all seven points, including an ace, and Niederer had two kills and two blocks during the run.

The Senators finished off Wooster behind the hitting of Devereaux, who had two kills to give Carson a 10-2 lead. Jessica Smallman served the last six points, including two aces, the last on match point. Kaitlin Brush and Niederer also had kills during the match-clinching rally.

Tabitha Adams had 33 assists, six digs and two blocks, Rachel DeRiemer had 15 kills and three digs, Niederer had five kills and three blocks, Brush had three blocks and five digs and Devereaux had nine kills and five aces.

GALENA 3, MCQUEEN 0

Galena improved to 3-1 in league play by rolling past McQueen 15-4, 15-6, 15-9. Whitney Dibble had seven kills, five blocks, two aces and nine digs, Joanna Hixon had six kills, five digs and two aces, Melissa Reaney had four kills and two blocks, Lydia Mailander had five digs, Mandy Dickman had 12 assists and Kate Wallace added eight assists for Galena.
