Douglas has second offensive outburst in a row, beats North Valleys 9-0

MINDEN -- Hannah Sullivan scored a first half hat trick and Terran Hadlock and Mackenzie Porter each tallied three assists in the first half as Douglas shutout North Valleys 9-0 on Tuesday at Douglas High.

It was the second big offensive outburst in a row for the Tigers after a disappointing 2-0 loss to South Tahoe last week. Douglas beat Wooster 10-0 on Saturday.

"In the two games we lost, we didn't play good soccer," said coach Fred Schmidt, whose team also lost to Reed 1-0 in their season opener. "We were equal to the other teams but we weren't patient. We think there are some good teams in this league but we don't want to lose to again. If we can beat Reno and South Tahoe next week, we'll be back in first."

The Tigers finished with outstanding efficiency against the Panthers, who fell to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in league. Douglas (4-2 overall, 3-1 Sierra League) scored five goals in the first 25 minutes of the game and they only had maybe a dozen shots on goal in the first half, but converted seven of them.

"In the first 25 minutes of the game, we were really possessing the ball a lot better," Schmidt said. "It's amazing how much you can score if you play patiently. The assists were outstanding, the goals were outstanding."

Sullivan got things started after banging home a through ball from Porter in the 9th minute. She made it 2-0 seven minutes later with a bloop header off a cross from Hadlock. When Tracey Hawks scored in the 19th minute off another assist from Hadlock, the route was officially on.

All seven goals were high quality, with the Tigers' next two coming off of volleys by Sullivan and Erin Gearty. Christina Bradshaw and Rebecca Wallstrum scored goals in the last four minutes of the first half off assists from Porter to give Douglas a 7-0 halftime lead.

It was a bit surprising even for Schmidt that his team jumped out to such an early lead. After all, North Valleys only lost to Carson by a score of 3-0 last Saturday and the Senators' third goal in that game was scored in the final minutes.

"This team has a tremendous amount of potential," Schmidt said. "I thought they (North Valleys) were actually better last year. They played us tougher."

In the second half, Allison Chapman scored of a cross from Britney Christen in the 47th minute to make it 8-0. Christen then added the last goal in the 69th minute off a Wallstrum cross.

CARSON 12, WOOSTER 0

Freshman Cassie Bowman scored three goals and Kristen Hale and Katie Kotter each scored two as the Senators scored their most goals of the season.

Katherine Rogers, Paige Thayer, Ashley Mather and Krista Kerfeld all scored their first goals of the season in the win. Carson (3-2-1 overall, 2-2-1 league) hosts Spanish Springs on Saturday at 1 p.m.
