Sheriff hopefuls' forum hours changed

Organizers of a forum for the two men running for Carson City sheriff have changed the hours of the event to 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Dena Lacy, secretary of the Carson City Sheriff's Protective Association, said the forum initially was slated to begin at 5 p.m.

"We changed it to better accommodate the public," Lacy said.

Winners of the October primary race for the sheriff's job, Bob Guimont and Kenny Furlong, said they plan to square off at the forum. Voters will decide Nov. 5 which made will become sheriff.

Lacy said each candidate will deliver an opening statement and take questions from the public.

Association president Tom Janas will moderate the discussion, Lacy said.

The association, which counts about 60 deputies in its members, has thrown its support behind Guimont, 35, a Carson City sheriff's deputy.

Furlong, 45, who works for the state Public Safety Investigations Division, initially balked at appearing at the forum when it was described as a debate.

After working out details of the format with association leaders, Furlong said he would go along with the town hall-style forum.
