None seriously hurt after two-car wreck

Two vehicles were upside down and backwards in a divider ditch Thursday evening after an accident on Highway 395 south of Washoe Lake.

All involved refused medical treatment.

The 5:30 p.m. accident occurred when the driver of a southbound white Jeep Cherokee veered off the highway and hit the concrete wall on the right side at the base of Lakeview Hill, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Larson said. The man said he fell asleep, according to Larson.

His Jeep either bounced off the wall or he over-corrected, Larson said, and when he veered back to the left, he hit the rear of an older Ford pickup towing a utility trailer. The truck was carrying three men to Carson after working on new homes in Reno's Arrowcreek neighborhood.

"He just wiped us out," said Samuel Samaniego, the driver of the Ford. Cradling his arm, Samaniego described being hit from behind.

"He must have been going like at least 80 to push us like that and flip us over."

The three men, all wearing their seat belts, saw the pavement going over their heads as the car spun and skidded into the center ditch.

"There was sparks I could see out the windshield, and we were spinning upside down," Samaniego said. "I was like, 'Wow, when is it going to stop?'"

Although he refused to be taken to Carson-Tahoe Hospital, he said he was not entirely unhurt.

"I'm going to go to the doctor later. I'm not having a stroke or nothing, but I'm going to go in and have them check it out," he said.

Firefighters from the Nevada Division of Forestry and Reno and Carson City fire departments also responded to the scene.
