The annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by Central Lyon County Fire District will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Fort Liberty ranch in Mark Twain, one of several hunts scheduled for area children.

"In the past, we've had about 700 children participate, but with the growth that has occurred, I expect about 1,000 this year," said Kathy Sellers, organizer of the Mark Twain event.

In Carson City on Sunday, the Jaycees 27th annual Easter egg hunt will be at Governor's Field. At 11 a.m., children with special needs will hunt; the general public will hunt at 1 p.m.

Hundreds of children are expected to turn out to search for more than 25,000 eggs.

Former resident and Mark Twain volunteer fire chief Tod Sulprizio donated the $1,530 needed to color the 7,200 eggs for the hunt in Lyon County.

"We are so grateful for his donation," said Mary Ellen Holly of the fire district. "He loves Mark Twain, and he loves children. He's a very thoughtful person."

Holly said the department received donations of candy, soda, water and toys from businesses in Lyon County.

"We are definitely appreciative for their donations," she said.

Jean and Burt Meyer, owners of the Fort Liberty ranch at Cardelli Road and Highway 50 East, volunteer at Mark Twain Fire Department and have sponsored the hunt for the past 15 years.

Holly said Meyer has been scouring the fields for weeks, removing brambles "so the kids don't get stuck."

Children ages 2 through 10 and accompanied by adults are invited to participate. They are asked to bring their own Easter baskets. Pillowcases and boxes will not be allowed. Call 246-6209 for information.

In Douglas County, youngsters age 5 and under will egg-hunt today at 11 a.m. in Lampe Park in Gardnerville.
