Report: Padgett will not be going to North Carolina

Kansas signee David Padgett hasn't spoken with the Northern Nevada media since former Jayhawk coach Roy Williams took the job at North Carolina on Monday. And his father, Pete, also hasn't said much to the local media.

But in an interview on Thursday with 6Sports reporter James Sido, a Lawrence, Kan., television station, Pete Padgett said there is no way David will be following Williams to Chapel Hill, N.C.

"I know there's been a lot of rumors out there, we need to put one to rest right now," Padgett told Sido. "There is no chance that David will go to North Carolina. None."

The report didn't say that the 6-foot-11 center from Reno High would definitely enroll at Kansas, either. However, it's the most likely scenario.

"Right now we plan on David being on campus for the first session of summer classes," Pete Padgett said. "The chancellor (of KU) and players have been in constant contact with David and have been great throughout this whole process. Obviously we're very interested to see who is hired, but I would be shocked if he's not in Lawrence this summer."

Illinois' Bill Self is the front-runner to replace Williams at Kansas. Marquette's Tom Crean, who led the Golden Eagles to the Final Four this year in only his fourth season, is also a top candidate. Wichita State's Mark Turgeon, who played as Kansas and was an assistant under Williams, told 6Sports that he has taken himself out of consideration for the job.

But even if David Padgett, whose chose Kansas over North Carolina, were to try and go to Chapel Hill, he would have to sit out a year under NCAA rules. The Tar Heels, though, don't appear to have the ability to offer a scholarship anyway since they awarded their only available scholarship to 6-foot-7 Reyshawn Terry, who signed in November.

The McDonald's All American also considered Stanford and Arizona.

WOOSTER SOFTBALL DROPS IN NATIONAL POLL

Wooster can thank Carson for dropping to 19th in the Thursday's USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. The Colts were ranked in the top 5 but lost to the Senators 9-3 last week. Wooster star pitcher Brianne McGowan, though, was absent in that game.

CARSON BASEBALL RETAINS FOURTH SPOT

The Senators, who leave on Sunday for a tournament in Hawai'i, retained the No. 4 spot in the latest Las Vegas Sun top 10 poll. Silverado (21-2) held on to its No. 1 ranking, as did second-ranked Reno, which will end the regular season with a three-game series against Carson. The Senators (18-5) are ranked behind No. 3 Centennial (20-4).
