Police link Vegas slaying to suspect in California bus standoff

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A man being held on charges of abducting his 2-year-old son and shooting at police from a city bus in Southern California might also be responsible for a murder in Las Vegas, police said Wednesday.

Daniel Sigler, 22, was being held in Long Beach, Calif., following a string of weekend carjackings in southern Nevada and a pre-dawn break-in at a Long Beach home where he was accused of shooting at his estranged girlfriend and taking his son.

"We're still trying to confirm our suspicions, but all indications lead us to Sigler," Las Vegas homicide Sgt. Kevin Manning said of the killing in Las Vegas.

Sigler was arrested Monday in Long Beach after allegedly shooting from a bus at a patrol car. He then released his son and surrendered, police said. The boy and bus passengers were unharmed.

Manning said that after Sigler was questioned by police in Long Beach, police in Las Vegas were directed to an apartment in a complex east of the Las Vegas Strip. Officers were initially unable to find the apartment on Tuesday, but returned about 9 p.m. after a resident reported a foul odor coming from an unit in another part of the complex.

Manning said it appeared the 20-year-old resident had been shot to death late last week. Investigators hoped an autopsy on Wednesday would yield more information.

Sigler remained jailed Wednesday in Long Beach on $1 million bail.

In Las Vegas, police said Sigler faces charges of attempted murder, robbery and kidnapping with a deadly weapon in a string of carjackings, including one on Saturday in which a motorist was shot twice. The victim drove home to get help and was recovering Wednesday from his wounds, authorities said.

Another motorist abandoned his truck on Saturday to a gunman who police said then crashed on the U.S. 95 freeway in Las Vegas. He made off with yet another car at gunpoint belonging to a group of Utah teens who stopped to help.

Police said that on Sunday, a gunman approached a couple in their driveway and forced them to drive him to Long Beach. They returned home to Las Vegas before reporting the crime.
