GARDNERVILLE -- Ian Jacobsen scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Whittell High School to a wild 14-13 non-league baseball victory against Dayton on Tuesday afternoon.
Whittell scored twice in the seventh to win a game that saw five lead changes to celebrate a senior day victory on its home field at Lampe Park.
Tyson Fredericks, who had five hits on the day, doubled off the fence in right-center field to lead off for the Warriors in their game-winning rally. Then Jacobsen's hot shot to third base was misplayed for an error that allowed Fredericks to score the tying run. After a strikeout, Tyler Corey reached on an infield hit and stole second base before Jacobsen scored on the wild pitch.
Despite the loss, Matt Bowman had a huge day with the bat as he went 4-for-4 with a long two-run homer that cleared the left field fence and glanced off a Dayton softball player standing next to her dugout on Field 4. Bowman is hitting 26-for-34 (.764) with six home runs and 23 RBIs in his last nine games.
Andrew Rice also hit 2-for-3 for the Dust Devils, who led 9-6 in the fourth inning and 13-11 in the sixth.
Fredericks went 5-for-6, including a home run to lead off Whittell's home half of the first inning. Jake Summers also hit 3-for-4 to aid the Warriors.
