C Hill run/walk climb benefits flag project

Supporters of Carson City's C Hill Flag can put their patriotism to the test and enjoy a morning in the sun by climbing C Hill. The hike is a fund-raiser for the projected new American flag to go up on the site.

Carson City's Jerry and Marilyn Reynolds were among the first to sign up for the climb. He's 71. and she's 70 . They'll lead the pack up 900 vertical feet to the site of the Old Glory that was blown away last winter. Surface distance is about a mile and a half.

"I think the new flag is a marvelous idea," said Marilyn Reynolds. "I'm a real flag lover, put my flag out every holiday.

"Jerry'll probably beat me to the top since he hikes faster," she added. "But we're both ready. I walk to the post office in the morning every day, and I'm looking forward to the hike."

Reynolds is a confirmed outdoors person, having taken part in full and half-marathons until a heel spur ended those outings. "Now it's just getting up there and getting back down," she said.

Registration is $5, and there will be specially designed T-shirts on sale for $12. The climb is sponsored by the Nevada Appeal to raise funds for the flag.

Climbers will start at the end of Mackay Drive below the "C" (near the Church of Latter-day Saints) one or two at a time in order to avoid traffic jams on the narrow trail.

Cold water, old-time jazz by the Carson Feetwarmers and other treats will be provided.

The idea for the climb came to Appeal writer Karl Horeis one afternoon when he decided to get some exercise between reporting and going to a computer class. He climbed C Hill and decided that such a climb would be good for both hikers and cost of the new flag. So he applied for a city permit for and organized the event.
