On Saturday, I helped Kiwanis, Harley-Davidson Financial

Services, Mervyns and the Salvation Army help 80 children shop for clothing and shoes to start school.

After their parents checked them in at the front door of

Mervyns, each child was assigned a chaperone. I had the most polite first-grader with pigtails. We didn't do too bad: four outfits, new shoes with a matching bracelet, a bag of socks, a package of underwear and, of course, a pair of angel pajamas.

This was followed by a breakfast from McDonald's and a big backpack filled with school supplies.

There were wonderful volunteers: 22 Carson City Kiwanis members, Carson Valley Kiwanis, St. Peter's Church members and staff from the Nevada Department of Transportation and the Attorney

General's Office.

April Flint from Harley-Davidson summed it up, "This is the best,"as she helped a boy meet his parent and get a backpack from Mervyns manager Shannon. Shannon said, "We would like to help every child in need so they can go to school feeling great,"

A Kiwanis member summed up the morning with, "It starts my day off feeling warm and fuzzy."

As part of the Tools for School Drive, Costco employees have stuffed more than 400 backpacks for the Back to School

Backpack Program. With the help of the Salvation Army, Sunset Rotary and Carson Kiwanis, middle- and high school students will help pass out the backpacks.

The Capital Auto Golf Tournament at Silver Oaks Golf Course helps sponsor a local high school student's vocational education. An ex-Dallas Cowboy will play, and the raffle item s will be great. If you can't hit the greens, you can sponsor a hole.

Come support the local Pop Warner Program. You can

throw pies at your favorite or not-so-favorite coaches at Governor's Field. Mayor Ray Masayko and Sheriff Kenny Furlong will take turns in the dunk tank and have a bet as to who will raise the most money.

WHAT: Golf followed by prime rib dinner at Mo & Sluggo's immediately

afterwards. Lunch and beverages on the course, prizes and raffle.

Coming soon: Aug.19-23 is the Summer Beach Blast at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. Children or adults wearing Hawaiian clothes receive $1 off admission to the museum, a lei or a beach accessory. Director Ken Beaton will heat up the summer with free hula lessons from Penny, the Hawaiian princess. Aug. 23 is the annual Kids Karnival outside the museum from 11-3 p.m. There will be games, food, a dunk tank, crafts, face painting, a bouncy house, balloons and prizes.
