Q-Tip: Kinney Reservoir

LOCATION: Kinney Reservoir, Calif.

HOW TO GET THERE: Drive south from Carson City to Woodfords, Calif., on a combination of U.S. 395, Nev. S.R. 88 and Calif. S.R. 88.

At Woodfords, take Calif. S.R. 89 to Markleeville. Then continue past Markleeville on a combination of S.R. 89 and S.R. 4, until you reach the reservoir, near the top of Ebbetts Pass.

Be forewarned that from the Wolf Creek turnoff to the top of the pass, S.R. 4 is very windy, narrow and steep.

Vehicles over 25 feet in length are not advised on this highway.

This will be about a 50 mile drive from Carson City.

HOW TO FISH: From shore, a float tube, inflatable raft, canoe or car-top boat.

There is no place to launch a boat from a trailer.

WHERE TO FISH: Anywhere along the shoreline as a shore fisherman, or fish out in the middle of the lake, if you have a float tube, inflatable raft, canoe or car-top boat.

WHAT YOU'LL CATCH: Mostly average rainbow trout and some Eastern brook trout.

SPECIAL REGULATIONS: You must wear your California fishing license where it is readily visible above the waist.

SPECIAL NOTE: Be sure to take a light jacket. It can get nippy in the morning if the wind is blowing.

FISHING UPDATE: Don and Elaine Quilici of Carson City fished at Kinney Reservoir, last Sunday morning. The weather was cool and very windy but the fishing was red-hot.

They began fishing at 10 a.m., quit at 1 p.m. and caught a total of 19 trout, all rainbows, up to 15 inches.

They were spincasting from shore, on the highway side of the reservoir, with red/white striped, orange/bronze striped or rainbow-colored, No. 2 TOR-P-DO lures.

Two other fishermen in float tubes caught and released many rainbow trout. They were in the middle of the lake, trolling with either salmon eggs or Power Bait.

Other shore fishermen were also catching trout by using bait on the bottom.
