Damian Baldovino from Lakeview, Ore., and Erinn Wells from Bridgeport, Calif., were the men's and women's winners of the Silver State Marathon on Sunday.

Baldovino, 36, was all alone at the finish of the marathon at Bowers Mansion Regional Park as he covered the 26.2-mile route through Washoe Valley in a time of 2 hours, 45 minutes and 32 seconds.

Baldovino's time was the fastest at Silver State since Nick Bingham ran 2:42:44 in 1997, but comes as no surprise. Baldovino, who runs for the Nike Portland team, has turned times of 14:46 for 5,000 meters and 1:07 for the half marathon this year and hopes to qualify to run at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in Birmingham, Ala.

Wells, 35, was the first woman and seventh overall finisher in 3:22:46. Her time was the fastest by a woman at Silver State since Zorica Rahovic set a course record of 3:00:44 in 1998.

Terry Haran from Boulder, Colo. finished second overall in 3:02:05 and Troy Soares from San Jose was third in 3:05:32. Elizabeth Lyles from Reno was the second woman in 3:28:52.

Carson City podiatrist Sean Lehmann finished 11th overall in 3:30:00.

Other local finishers in the marathon included Jim Berryman-Shafer from Fernley, who was 41st in 3:56:40. Claudia Berryman-Shafer was 63rd overall and first in the women's 50-59 age group in 4:20:05.

Clare Holland of Carson City was 65th overall and fourth in the women's 40-49 age group in 4:22:20.

Calvin Dutton of Dayton, who ran the Tahoe Rim Trail 50K last month, finished 84th overall in 4:39:59.

In the half marathon, Carson City's Scott Robertson was fourth overall in a time of 1:22:15. Scott Young of Reno won the race in 1:15:52. Lynice Anderson of Reno was the first woman and sixth overall in 1:28:03.

Alan Dehlinger of Reno won the 10K in 35:14. Dan Geib of Reno was second in 36:13 and Daniel Sipko of Minden was third in 37:31. Yerington's Ray Waterman was sixth overall in 39:11.

The first woman to finish the 10K was Kristen Herman of Reno in 45:00.

Carson City racewalker Bill Penner finished first overall in the event's 10K walk with a time of 57:40. This marked the fifth straight year Penner has been the first man to finish in Silver State's 10K.

A total of 692 runners and walkers registered for the event, 167 in the marathon.
