Dayton's Todd and Fran Bobula and their border collie -- Gabriel "Gabe" Angel -- made impressive showing at the 2003 Northwest Bi-Mart Doc's Dog Challenge in Elkton, Ore.

Gabe -- a 2-year-old border collie -- placed seventh in the dog jumping competition, a popular event in which dogs jump as far as they can off a dock and splash into the water.

Todd, 33, Fran, 37, and Gabe were up against tough competition. Of the 31 dogs that competed, four participated in the recent Great Outdoor Games in Reno and one won a bronze at Reno.

But Gabe held his own as he was one of the 12 dogs that advanced to the finals.

Gabe jumped 20 feet seven inches in the finals to place seventh. Sadie, a golden retriever owned by Matt Chisholm of Spokane, Wash., won the event with a leap of 22-8.

The event was a sanctioned ESPN DockDogs event. More information on DockDogs, is available at www.dockdogs.com.
