120 YEARS AGO

On Sunday morning at 2:55 a.m., there were three violent earthquake shocks felt here. The oscillation of the first shock was from north to south, the other two from east to west. It is authentically stated that there has been a Chinese leper in this community for many years. He hasn't, however, been floating around in society much.

100 YEARS AGO

Abe Cohn at the Emporium has quite a curiosity in the form of a deer lick. The lick is composed of a large piece of rock salt the color of agate. Before it was worn away by Pine Nut deer, it must have weighed close to 100 pounds. John Porterfield found it while on a sagehen hunt.

70 YEARS AGO

Andrew Lee Wilson, 87, for nearly 70 years a resident of Nevada and one of the pioneer residents of the state, died at the home of his son Drew Wilson at Smith. He joined the gold rush and made the trip to San Francisco in a sailing vessel around the horn and hauled freight to the historic mining camp of Bodie for 25 years between there and Hawthorne. His other son is James Wilson of Gardnerville. He also had daughters.

50 YEARS AGO

Carson City's three new schools wee officially dedicated with a ceremony at the new Fifth Street site. The others are on Corbett and Musser streets.

20 YEARS AGO

Douglas County Fair kicked off with a cow-milking contest featuring County Parks Director Marty Strubel squirting milk into a pop bottle. The event was won by District Judge Howard McKibben and District Attorney Kolvert.

10 YEARS AGO

Carson City's Young Volunteers of Nevada were recognized for donating more than 10,000 hours during the year. Heading the long list was Colleen Aalber.
