A 50-year-old man was taken by Care Flight helicopter to Carson-Tahoe Hospital after a mountain biking accident in the Carson River canyon near Mound House on Saturday morning.
The man, whose name and hometown were not released, was listed in stable condition with a possible dislocated hip.
He was mountain biking with a friend Saturday morning south of Mound House when he apparently lost control and went into a ravine, injuring his hip. His friend rode his bike several miles to a Mound House business to call 911. The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m.
He met with rescue crews from Central Lyon County Fire Department and guided them to the injured man. Six firefighters made their way to the scene in three vehicles: two patrol trucks and a squad truck.
"They got to a point where they couldn't take the vehicles any farther and they had to hike down to where he was," said firefighter Jeff May, who was on standby near Mound House businesses at the south end of Kit Kat Road.
He said the Care Flight helicopter flew in from Washoe Medical Center in Reno and landed near the vehicles above the injured man.
The rescue crew loaded the man into a wire "stokes" basket, hauled him up the hill by hand, and transferred him into the helicopter.
The Care Flight crew took off in the narrow canyon through gusting winds and flew him to the hospital at about 11:45 a.m.
