Carson boys hoops win even opener

The Carson High boys basketball team continued to show its progress with a 60-43 win over Santa Teresa of San Jose, Calif., in the first round of the Rail City Classic on Wednesday.

"We're coming along," Carson assistant coach Carlos Mendeguia said. "Each game we're improving in certain areas."

Carson broke the game open when it outscored Santa Teresa 20-13 in the third quarter to take a 44-33 lead. Mendeguia credited the play of the guards, including Jeff Hurzel and Adam Houghton, for opening up the offense.

"Our guards were able to break down the defense pretty well and get some easy shots for some people," Mendeguia said.

Mendeguia also praised Adam Houghton, who received a start for Rory Wunsch, who was under the weather. Houghton scored 16 points and was able to set up scoring chances with his penetration down the lane. "He created a lot of easy shots for people," Mendeguia said.

Jason Alcasas scored 15 points and Kyle Bacon added 13 points for Carson, which plays at 6 p.m. today against Thunder Ridge, Colo., at Reed. Thunder Ridge, which has eight players at 6-4 or taller and one at 6-8, is considered to be one of the powerhouses in Colorado. "They are huge," Mendeguia said.

HUG 83, DAYTON 57

"I tell you what, they're quick," said Dayton coach Rob Streeter after his team lost to Northern 4A power Hug at the Rail City Classic. "It's tough to simulate that kind of quickness in practice."

Hug hit 12 three-pointers, including six in the fourth quarter, on its way to the win.

"We're getting out of this what we need," Streeter said. "We're getting better. I'm relatively pleased with some of the progress our kids are making. We've still got a long ways to go."

Adam Diament scored 18 points, Ryan Blaver added 10 points and Matt Bowman had nine points for Dayton. Things don't get any easier for the Dust Devils, who play another 4A power, McQueen, at 4:30 p.m. today at Hug.

GALENA GIRLS 39, MANOGUE 27

It wasn't pretty, but the Galena High girls basketball team outscored Manogue 12-4 in the third quarter to break the game open and take a 34-18 lead.

"Actually we did play better defense," Galena coach Karen Friel said. "Any time you get a win, that's a good thing. It doesn't matter what the score is."

Caitlin Anderson scored 13 points and Caitlin Crofts added 10 points for Galena.

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS

Dayton 62, Fallon 50

Freshman Eric Hopper scored 17 points to lead the Dayton JV boys to a non-league win at home against Fallon.

Josh Wagner also scored 13 points and Josh Nieubuurt 12 for the Dust Devils (2-4), who led throughout the game.
