-- Whether or not you're on the squad, you can still cheer for your favorite Mr. Carson High candidate and make those guys feel extra special. The mock pageant starts at 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Proceeds benefit the Carson High Cheerleading squad. Call 283-1600.
-- Who says New Year's comes but once a year? Celebrate Chinese New Year from 1 to 3 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary School, 111 Toler Ave., Gardnerville. The open-to-the-public event costs $4 ages 5-older, $2 seniors, children 4-younger free. Call 782-9828.
-- MTV figured out way back that nothing complements good music more than looking at something cool while listening to it. Watch outdoor photographer Mark Vollmer and singer/songwriter Jim Eaglesmith blend their talents at Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park, 6000 Bartley Ranch Road in Reno. Show starts at 7 p.m., and won't cost you a thing. Call 828-6612.
-- Steel Breeze brings their mix of cover music from bands such as Santana and U2 to The Upstage Center Theatre, 900 Mallory Way. Show time is at 9 p.m., and $10 will get you in the door.
-- Watch out. Voodoo Organist casts a musical spell at Ark-a'ik, 555 E. Fourth St. in Reno, at noon for $5. Or head back to Ark-a'ik at 8 p.m. for a double-play of bands featuring Subject of Us, also for $5.
-- "Fiddler on the Roof Jr." performed by BAC Stage Kids at 7 p.m. today and Sunday, plus 2 p.m. matinee both days. Tickets $8 general, $5 students, seniors, BAC members, free 5-younger with adult. Call 883-1976.

-- It never hurts to try. Proscenium Players Inc. holds open auditions for Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Nile" 2 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St. Call 883-1976. Parts may require different accents, but that's the fun of acting, right?
-- You've got to love a discount. Join the 4-H Ski/Board Club and head from Douglas County to Kirkwood Ski Resort every other Sunday through April. Full-day lift tickets cost $25 if you're between the ages of 13 and 18. Tickets for 6 through 12-year-olds are $12, and adult volunteers pay $35. Call 782-9960.
